A triangle many traveled Niagra, NY & DC.


Niagra : When the boat, which carried 100's of blue raincoat clad tourists, took the curve the Horseshoe Falls stood in front of us with its gigantic beauty,the Maid of the mist.American Falls was cool and calm from the boat with a big rainbow, smiling at you.But cave of winds tour which took us near to it made us experience the storm like spray of rushing,cold water.
Was a bit surprised when we landed, to see the presence of Indians there.Couldn't count the no. of Indian hotels at Niagra, Punjabi Dhaba's to South Indian Vegetarian restaurants and all crowded.
Majority of tourists were Indians, probably because Niagra being one of the few safe bet to bring your parents when in US.
That was Niagra, Nature at its best !


New York : Skyscrapers,crowded streets,metros,yellow cabs,times square,nasdaq,statue of Liberty. People form all walks of life, tourists, workers, managers, whites, blacks, Indians, Asians, Europeans just name and you can spot them there.
It was Brazilian day and saw a big band show there.. Brazilian beauties dressed in their national flag dancing through the streets.
Best dialogue was from the tour guide who pointed to the AIG building and said "You can just walk in because, 8 out f every 10 floors are yours" referring to the bailout
That was New York,Capitalism at its best !


Washington D.C. : Calm and quiet city.A sudden feeling of emptiness when you travel from NY to DC.DC is filled with gov. offices,memorials,monuments and museums.Paining legs and the drizzle made it hard to walk around.But it was good to see the no. of US Flags on these monuments and the patriotism flashing on the face of the visitors.
That was Washington D.C, Patriotism at its best !

Festival of Flowers and Prosperity !

Wherever in the world, Onam is always special for a Malayalee.It brings along with it a string of nostalgic memory about God's own country.
Flowers, Pookkalam, Thrikkarappan, Maveli, PazhamNurrukku-Pappadam-Varuthupperi, Onappada, Onam competitions in schools and colleges, People in traditional costumes, Thiruvathira kali, Onasadya, Onachantha, Onam shopping, Onam Discounts and Offers,Special TV Programmes , New movies(known as Onam Release), Vallamkali, Vadamvali, Athachamayam, Pulikkali and the list goes on.Can see a festive mood everywhere.Every one in high spirits.Yes days become something special.

To add to these,recently in last 3 - 4 years things are changing a bit.
Some more addition to Onamvisuals. Teek-Teek sound all around from cellphones receiving SMS wishing Onam, Wishes through e-mails,orkut,facebook and chat statuses eh! Thanks to IT revolution Long queue infront of beverages corp. outlets which you dont see even infront of Onachantha.Posters and Ads of caterers who serve onasadya with 60 items including 3 different payasams,making everything instant,easy and readymade.People glued to their TV sets in which our own malayalam channels competing to telecast 15 to 20 blockbuster movies,thara sallapams,mimicry and comedy shows.

This year I had my first onam outside India.Just heard of Onam@US,experienced this year.2 days of fun.A day for preperation and finally the celebration next day.Pooparikkal was fun stealing flowers from freeway,complex and other gardens at 2 AM.Nice pookkalam,crowd of 60 people,Good Sadya,Fun games,Tug of war.Finally managed to put up a decent show !!

Tug of war : Married v/s, Bachelors which we lost pathetically.Another reason to think of getting married soon ;D

All these makes Onam more than a harvest festival or King mahabali's yearly visit !

As the SMS says "Nilavilakkum Niraparayum.. Pinne orupidi thumba poovum.. Manasil orupaadu snehavumayi hrudayam niranja Onashamsakal !!"
